
TENCEL vs Cotton vs Bamboo: What Your Underwear Fabric Actually Does to Your Body

Most men give their underwear about as much thought as the air in their tires. It's there, it works, you buy more when the waistband starts to fray.
But here's something worth sitting with for a minute. The fabric pressed against the most hormonally sensitive tissue in your body for sixteen hours a day is not a neutral variable. It affects moisture, temperature, bacterial load, and in ways we're only beginning to measure, what ends up inside you.
If you pay attention to what you eat, what you train with, and what you sleep on, your underwear fabric deserves the same scrutiny. This is a field guide to the three fibers most men are actually choosing between, and what the science says about each.
Cotton: The Default
Cotton has been the dominant underwear fiber for a century because it's cheap, breathable, and widely available. It's also the fabric most men default to without thinking.
What it does well: Cotton is naturally soft, hypoallergenic for most skin types, and absorbs moisture readily. It breathes better than any synthetic and has no meaningful microplastic shedding because it's a plant fiber.
What it doesn't do well: Cotton absorbs moisture but doesn't wick it away. Once saturated, it stays saturated, and that creates exactly the humid environment where fungal and bacterial populations expand. It also loses structural integrity quickly, which is why cotton boxers sag after a few washes.
The manufacturing reality: Conventional cotton is one of the most pesticide-intensive crops on earth. Organic cotton eliminates that issue but represents less than 1% of global cotton production. Most "cotton" underwear on the market is conventionally grown and processed with formaldehyde-based wrinkle resistors and chlorine bleaches.
If you want a cotton boxer that actually lives up to the fabric's reputation, look for GOTS-certified organic cotton. Without that certification, you're wearing a fiber story that comes with chemical baggage most brands won't disclose.
Bamboo: The Misunderstood One
Bamboo viscose has been marketed aggressively as the sustainable, antibacterial alternative to cotton. The truth is more complicated.
What it does well: The finished fabric is genuinely soft, has good moisture-wicking properties, and does offer mild antibacterial performance. It drapes beautifully and feels premium against the skin.
What's misleading about it: Almost all "bamboo" fabric on the market is bamboo viscose, which is made by dissolving bamboo pulp in a chemical bath that typically includes carbon disulfide. This is a toxic solvent that's hazardous to factory workers and leaves residual chemistry in the finished fabric unless the manufacturer uses a closed-loop process, which most don't.
The FTC has actually penalized brands for marketing bamboo viscose as "natural bamboo" because by the time it reaches you, it's a regenerated cellulose fiber with very little of the original plant's properties intact.
The certification catch: GOTS certification is restricted to natural organic fibers. Bamboo viscose cannot be GOTS certified because the viscose process is chemically intensive, regardless of how the bamboo was grown. If a brand claims both "bamboo" and "GOTS," something is wrong with the claim.
Mechanically processed bamboo (bamboo linen) exists and is genuinely natural, but it's rare, expensive, and rough in hand feel. You're not finding it in men's underwear.
TENCEL Lyocell: The Engineered Alternative
TENCEL Lyocell is what you get when someone decides to solve the bamboo viscose problem properly.
What it is: TENCEL is a branded lyocell fiber produced by Lenzing, an Austrian fiber company. The raw material is typically eucalyptus wood from sustainably managed forests. The wood pulp is dissolved in a non-toxic organic solvent (NMMO), spun into fiber, and 99%+ of that solvent is recovered and reused in a closed-loop system. The result is a cellulose fiber with almost none of the environmental or chemical baggage of viscose production.
What it does well: TENCEL absorbs moisture 50% more efficiently than cotton, wicks it away from the skin, and releases it into the air. It's naturally antibacterial because of how its fiber structure regulates moisture, which suppresses odor-causing bacteria without any added chemistry. It's also smoother at the microscopic level than cotton, which means less friction against skin, which matters when you're wearing something for sixteen hours.
The microplastic question: TENCEL is a cellulose fiber. When it eventually breaks down, it decomposes back into organic matter. It does not shed microplastics. This is the single most important property of the fabric for men concerned about what's sitting against reproductive tissue all day.
Certification: Quality TENCEL Lyocell carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, which tests the finished fabric for harmful substances across a standardized list of regulated chemicals. OEKO-TEX is what you want to see on synthetic-cellulose blends. GOTS does not apply to TENCEL and any brand claiming both is confused about their own supply chain.
How This Applies to QUOR
The QUOR Performance Boxer is built 95% TENCEL Lyocell and 5% BPA-free elastane for the body of the garment, which is what gives it the recovery and fit that a pure cellulose fiber can't provide on its own. The inner pouch, the part of the garment that contacts the most sensitive tissue, is 100% TENCEL Lyocell with no stretch fiber at all.
This construction was intentional. The stretch blend handles the engineering problem of fit and wear across a day of movement. The pure TENCEL pouch handles the biological problem of what's touching reproductive tissue for sixteen hours. One fabric cannot solve both problems. So we used two.
The entire garment is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified for the fabric, BPA free, and designed to the standard we'd want for ourselves.
The Takeaway
Cotton is fine if it's GOTS-certified organic and you're comfortable with uncomfortably wet boxers post workout and sauna.
Bamboo viscose is marketed better than it actually is, and unless the brand can explain their specific closed-loop process, you're wearing a chemically intensive regenerated fiber with a clean-sounding name.
TENCEL Lyocell is the fabric that does what the other two claim to do. It's more expensive to source, it requires a specific supply chain, and it's why almost no men's underwear brand in the US uses it as the primary fiber. That's changing.
